Adult Basic Education Service

 Part Time


The Adult Basic Education Service (ABE) provided classes for adults who wish to return to learning and improve their reading, writing, spelling, math’s and basic computer literacy. Support is provided for learners either on a one-to-one basis or in small groups.

The service is free and confidential and can be accessed at any time by contacting the local centre. Classes are part-time, tuition is arranged as much as possible to suit the needs of the learner. Tuition is provided by trained tutors in a friendly and informal atmosphere.

CERTIFICATION

Participants can learn at their own pace and progress to certification level (QQI, Junior Certificate and Leaving Certificate) if desired.

   ABE Programmes

Intensive Tuition in ABE (ITABE)

This runs for 10-14 weeks, 6 hours per week and offers adults the opportunity to improve their basic skills at a more intensive level and at a pace that suits them.

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)

 Basic, Improvers and QQI certified spoken and written English classes for adults for whom English is not their first language. (Fees may apply).

Computer Courses

Beginners and accredited computer courses are offered both during the day and evening.

Hobby Courses

Various hobby courses including Art, Horticulture and others, for adults who want to learn in a relaxed environment.

Outreach Service

An outreach worker based in the Athy centre works in partnership with agencies/services in the community.
