Level 5 Certificate in Early Learning and Care (Stage 1)

This is a brand new professional qualification leading to the Level 5 Certificate in Early Learning and Care. As part of this programme, participants will be prepared for the role of Early Learning and Childhood care professionals. The new award is an ambitious new QQI programme that will bring the professionalism of the childcare sector to a new level.

In this course, students will

Outline historical and legislative developments in the ELC sector aimed at

Improving the lives o children and their families.

Identify practices and procedures in line with legislation, regulation, and policy to ensure appropriate safety and care of all stakeholders for ELC settings.

Explore the rights of children and their families as underpinned by national and international developments.

Identify current child protection legislation, guidelines and responsibilities for all staff in elc settings.

Develop creative, problem-solving skills.

Develop excellent reflective, interpersonal and team working skills.

Entry Requirements

Entry Requirements

Applicants should have a full Level 4 Certificate, Leaving Certificate, or equivalent qualifications.

To be able to participate fully in this programme, learners need the following:

  • B2 equivalency in CEFR in ready, writing, listening and speaking.

  • Participate in the Garda Vetting procedure.

  • Basic computer skills such as basic word processing, Internet or email.

  • Be able to work effectively in a group situation.

  • Attend all timetabled classes for the duration of the programme

  • Participate in the work experience aspects of the programme. (150 hrs, 2 settings( 0-2 years 8 months years & 2 years 8 months to 6 years old.)

  • Access to a computer and the Internet to study.

Certification

Successful completion of this course will lead to a Major QQI Level 5 award in Certificate in Early Learning and Care

  • Children's Right, Legislation and Regulation

  • Early Childhood Growth and Development

  • Curriculum, Play, and Creative Studies

  • Understanding and Assisting Children with Additional Needs

  • Holistic Care of Children (Birth to Six Years)

  • Professional ICT Skills

Progression Opportunities

Where will this qualification lead me?

Employment options: All staff working directly with children in the Childhood Care Sector must hold a minimum of QQI Level 5 Major Certificate in Early Learning and Care Early Learning.

Lifelong learning options: Graduates of the Level 5 programme can progress to the Advanced Certificate in Early Learning and Care at QQI Level 6 of the National Framework of Qualifications.

All ECCE Room Leaders must hold the Level 6 Qualification.

This award will allow graduates to progress from their advanced certificate straight to honours degree level that recognises the value of the professionals at all levels working in the ELC settings across the country.

All courses, dates, and times are provisional and must be confirmed. Programme modules are provisional and may be changed at the discretion of the ETB. All Classes will commence, subject to a sufficient number of student enrolments.
